Q: Hi, Deb. Thank you for joining #SeasonsOfKidLit! I’m excited to have you and talk about your adorable new book that’s perfect for the season: Thankful Thanksgiving. Before we dive into your fun title, I’d love for everyone to get to know you more. Can you share a little about yourself with us?

A: Hi Heather. Thanks so much for inviting me to join #SeasonsOfKidLit! I’m excited to share a little about me and Thankful Thanksgiving. I’ve been in the children’s book arena for nearly 30 years on and off. I was first published by Millbrook Press in 1999 with my book, Monkey See Monkey Do and Animal Exercise Book For You! and then shortly after stepped away to homeschool my son for many years. I read and wrote but I just didn’t submit for publication consideration. Fast forward to my son growing up and needing me less and less, I felt a call to get back into it. I’ve been actively submitting again for about five years and mostly enjoying the journey. I say mostly because I’d forgotten the familiar sting of continuous rejection that comes with the publishing endeavor! I’ve had to rebuild my thick skin.

Q: Thanks for sharing that - 30 years of writing children's books is impressive!

Thankful Thanksgiving, follows a little mouse who’s sharing everything they’re thankful for. What can readers expect to see when flipping through the pages of this sweet board book?

A: Little readers and listeners will see themselves in the mouse family gathering together for the holiday. The sweet illustrations will remind them of all the things they treasure about family but may not yet be able to articulate—fun and funny relatives, the love of grandparents and traditions that carry on year after year.

Q: What are some of the things the mouse in your story is thankful for, and how can children relate?

A: The little mouse is grateful for visiting relatives, favorite foods and being grateful for all it means to be a part of a loving family.

Q: What makes Thankful Thanksgiving the perfect read for the season?

A: Thankful Thanksgiving is the perfect read for the Thanksgiving season! It is written for toddlers and preschoolers and makes a great gift to bring to a Thanksgiving gathering. And honestly I think that even if there aren’t really little children in attendance, just reading this rhyming tribute to Thanksgiving will warm the hearts of all ages. I sometimes struggle with offering a blessing at the table. This book would provide a warm and touching read aloud to honor the meal and all we come together to celebrate on Thanksgiving and hopefully, always!

Q: Thanks so much for sharing your new book with us, Deb! What are some other titles of yours we should be on the lookout for?

A: God Sent You With Love, illustrated by Alessia Trunfio and also published by Cottage Door Press just came out October 31st! It is a poem of praise from a mother to her child. It’s a large format board book/ keepsake book meant to gift at baby showers, for new mothers and at baptisms. This one is especially near to my heart. The inspiration came from years of infertility and then the gift of finally having my son. So, I think all women will appreciate the message but especially those who had a longer journey getting to motherhood.

That sounds wonderful. Thanks again for joining us and giving us a close-up look at your new book!
